Call for entry: Phobias

In collaboration with photographer Billy Hickey, Green Street Photo Collective invites artists to submit photos that represent the theme of fear – literal images of something photographers are afraid of, or photos that emit the feeling of fear. This collaborative group show encourages photographers and viewers to engage with fear, to be brave, and analyze the emotion and its causes. 

In a month associated with all things scary, Phobias calls on us to look deeper, asking why and getting to the heart of something we all feel, but rarely put to words, and almost never put to visuals.

Billy Hickey is a nature photographer from Massachusetts, and has spent most of his life afraid of spiders and photos of their faces. In his personal work Billy makes stories about the intersections of the natural and human worlds covering topics such as falconry, light pollution, fireflies, and goats. Billy’s passion is learning about nature and sharing its wonders through photography with the hope to educate and inspire. In 2020 he graduated from the International Center of Photography and his project “How We Were” won first place in Lensculture’s Black and White Photography Awards. Billy’s work has been featured in the Eastern Mass. Hawkwatch’s Newsletter, The Wall Street Journal, STAT News, and the New York Times. From Spring 2023 until Spring 2024, he was an Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. During this time Billy made An Uncommon Inheritance which looks at the ecosystem formed in the Cemetery that is shared by human, animals, plant, and fungus alike. He is based in Watertown, Massachusetts, available for assignments around New England.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Photographers may submit up to 3 photos for consideration. Selected works will be curated in a salon-style exhibition, with prints ranging slightly above and below 5x7 inches.

ENTRY FEE

This call for entry is free to enter, with a suggested donation.

ELIGIBILITY

This call for entry is open to photographers world-wide. Photographs made using generative AI will not be considered.

PRINTING 

Green Street Photo Collective will handle printing selected images, with prints to be returned to artists after the show's closing.
